The History of Fraternities at JMU

The first fraternity- Alpha Tau Omega-was established at JMU in 1914, and since then, many more have followed suit. Delta Sigma Phi, for example, was founded in 1933, while Delta Gamma came to campus in 1917. Today, the university's Interfraternity Council (IFC) oversees the 20 plus fraternal organizations, providing a unifying presence for Greek life on campus. However, the story of Greek life at JMU doesn't start and end with the IFC. each organization has a unique history, mission, and set of values that are an integral part of the JMU experience.

For Amy Rodriguez, a senior and member of Alpha Phi, the Greek community has been a vital part of her college experience. "I was drawn to Alpha Phi because of the strong sisterhood and sense of belonging it offered," Rodriguez explains. "The bonding over study hours, events, and conversations has made lifelong friends for me. strongly recommend joining if you want a supportive community that pushes you to be your best self!"

Types of Fraternities at JMU

Aside from traditional social fraternities like Alpha Phi and Sigma Chi, JMU also has chapters of professional fraternities for students with similar career goals or interests.

* For example, Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) is a professional pre-health fraternity, uniting students who aim to pursue careers in medicine, dentistry, or other healthcare fields.

* Delta Sigma Pi is another example of a professional fraternity that serves business and entrepreneurial students.
